Graphics Weekend at the London Design Festival

Taking place on 13 and 14 September, the weekend will feature activities and talks from the likes of Paula Scher, Irma Boom, Jim Sutherland and David Pearson.

On the first day, Saturday 13, Design Week columnist Jon Daniel will present a ‘4 Corners’ session, featuring work from across the African diaspora. Jim Sutherland will talk about play in graphic design and Alan Kitching will present work from throughout his 50-year career, including a recent collaboration with Monotype.

Pentagram partner Paula Scher is flying in especially from New York to give Saturday’s headline session.

On Sunday, designer David Pearson will talk about his book cover designs by Penguin, joined by Penguin art director Jim Stoddart. Sarah Hyndman will present a ‘Typetasting’ session looking at how typefaces influence what we read. Hyndman says the audience will have a chance to volunteer to be ‘lab rats’ in her ongoing research into typeface association…

Sunday’s headline session will come from Amsterdam-based Irma Boom, who will be talking about her book-making and other design projects.

Meanwhile two panel sessions, one on each day, will look at life in the design industry, both will be chaired by Design Week editor Angus Montgomery.

Saturday’s session will look at how to break into the design industry and will feature illustrator Gordon Reid, designer Jack Renwick and Magpie co-founder Ben Christie.

Sunday’s session will look at how to run a design business and will feature illustrator Lizzie Mary Cullen, SomeOne co-founder Gary Holt and 1977 Design co-founder Paul Bailey.

All sessions are free apart from Paula Scher and Irma Boom’s talks, which will be ticketed.
