How far have you drawn?

Ever wondered how many miles you’ve drawn?

Well, you may need not wonder any more, thanks to a rather brilliant invention – The Six Mile Pencil.

Like a sort of creativity pedometer, the device shows you how far you’ve drawn with a mile ruler printed on the body of the pencil itself.

However, long-distance scribblers may need more than one – the pencil contains only enough graphite for six miles – hence its name.

We’re aware that essentially, it’s a normal pencil, but with measurements. However, it’s a charming idea, with lovely slick, school-stationery-kit colour branding (Pantone 107c, FYI).

The project is currently being funded on Kickstarter, and it’s hoped the pencil will be produced by the 90-year-old-family pencil business, Chambers.

Mat and Ben Lyon of Sheffield-based design consultancy Lyon & Lyon, which says it wanted to  “create an honest low tech product”.

It adds: “The six mile pencil was born from the idea of encouraging people to get back in touch with the almost redundant skill of using a pencil. The pencil displays how many miles of graphite you have used and how far your thoughts have travelled.

“With every hand drawn sketch, memo or offensive doodle of your boss, you can visibly see how far you’ve drawn and fist pump the air at every milestone.”

For metric types, the pencil is also available in a ten-kilometre version.
