Die Fläche, by Swann Galleries

New York’s Swann Galleries will be selling 100-year-old design magazine Die Fläche this month, and has revealed some of its imagery in advance of the auction.

Die Fläche – German for The Surface – was a design magazine founded in 1903 by visual arts group the Wiener Werkstätte in Vienna, Austria. It featured book, poster and print design, alongside illustration, textiles, weaving, stencils, embroidering, monograms, jewellery and more.

It contained 192 illustrated pages, featuring work by Viennese artists such as Bertold Löffler, Moriz Jung, Franz Karl Delavilla and Urban Janke. A second, and final, volume was printed in 1910.

The magazine is expected to sell for $12,000-$18,000 (£9,300-£14,000). The auction will take place on 25 May at the Swann Galleries in New York, US.
