ICA LA identity, by Mark Bradford

Artist Mark Bradford has designed a new identity for The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

The institution has changed its name from Santa Monica Museum and moved to downtown Los Angeles.

ICA LA will open in autumn 2017 and its new logo has been designed to capture “a sense of place” and provide inspiration, according to ICA executive director Elsa Longhauser.

The design is based on trade signs that advertise services and events throughout LA in a style made popular by the locally based Colby Poster Printing Company.

Brandford, who is interested in mapping communities and transforming everyday materials, has looked to connect the city’s many neighbourhoods with the identity.

The new museum is being designed by Why architects.
