Harrods perfects art of social climbing
Harrods describes its new escalator, due to be unveiled this May, as a “stairway to heaven”. Incorporating “immense stone columns, ornate bronzed balustrades, sphinx heads, polished granite floors and a ceiling depicting the night sky”, it has cost nearly 20m. All to take customers one step beyond the limits of good taste, judging from the description.
