Berlin’s MetaDesign has been appointed as the design consultancy for VW and Audi worldwide.
German car group VW has contracted MetaDesign for three years to “realign” the VW and Audi identities and control global implementation, from dealerships through to literature.
MetaDesign, which last week announced a London arm, MetaUnion (DW 4 August), had been in competition with other European consultancies for the VW and Audi work (DW 5 May).
MetaDesign director Erik Spiekermann says the creation of electronic design manuals for the brands could take up to five years. He says any changes to the identities will be “subtle” attempts to move the brands slightly upmarket.
An unnamed Swiss consultancy in Zurich is believed to be working on a similar programme for the VW-owned Seat brand. VW’s Skoda brand may be considered for a similar programme next year, adds Spiekermann.
