DIY stores yet to nail design

DIY retailers with a strong brand identity and customer-friendly store environments are getting the “lion’s share” of the market, according to research company Verdict.

In its latest report, Verdict on DIY retailers 1997, the company records strong growth in DIY sales as the housing market continues to recover.

But Clive Vaughan, retail consultant at Verdict, says that design is only playing a small part in differentiation between different retailers. He described their appearances as quite “samey”.

B&Q leads the market with a 16 per cent share of sales.
