Cooper Rose persuades Kingerlee to develop old brewery identity

Cooper Rose has created a name, brand identity, website and marketing materials for luxury Oxford apartment development The Lion Brewery, in a project worth £70 000 in fees to the group.

The development stands on the site of a former Morrells brewery dating back 250 years, and the original design brief was to create a name with ‘no brewery associations’, says Cooper Rose project director Richard Cornish.

But the strongest name to emerge from research was The Lion Brewery, and the group convinced the client to use a name connected to the site’s past, he says.

The red marque features a chimney icon in place of the letter ‘i’ in ‘lion’, mirroring the brewery’s most recognisable feature. It is applied to banners, 3D material in the marketing suite and print literature.

Cooper Rose creative director Craig Johns led the work creatively, working alongside Cornish. The project grew from speculative contact made by the group to the client, developer Kingerlee. The consultancy took part in a two-way pitch last October to win the work and was appointed in February.
