Designers needed for new club

A new exclusive club is hunting for young designers to create interiors for its Victorian home just north of London’s Notting Hill.

The Cobden Club, a former working men’s club, is to be converted into a drinking and dining den in the mould of the Chelsea Arts Club and The Groucho Club. It has a membership committee which includes Sebastian Conran, Will Self and Malcolm McLaren.

Club director Ivo Hesmondalgh plans to shortlist five or six young designers to take part in a creative pitch. The unsuccessful applicants will be rewarded with shares in the club or life membership of it, says Hesmondalgh.

Building work will start in the next few weeks, subject to funding, and the directors will then start thinking about designers. Decisions on the design of menus and other graphics will be made over the summer and the club is set to open this autumn.
