Amalgam shops for museum

Amalgam has been appointed to design two new temporary shops at the British Museum to cater for six million visitors a year.

The existing shop at London’s Great Russell Street is to close in preparation for the Great Court redevelopment project which is due to be completed in 2003.

The first 130m2 shop is due to open in January and will stock medium-priced gifts. The second 180m2 shop will be housed in the listed Grenville Library, and is to open in the summer, stocking more expensive ranges.

Interiors will be handled by Mark Simpson and graphics by Lucy Hamilton, both at Amalgam.

The group was appointed on the strength of previous work for the British Museum.
