CK makes Cardinal point for Land

Retail specialist Checkland Kindleysides has been appointed by property developer Land Securities as retail consultant for its £200m Cardinal Place development in London’s Victoria.

The work follows the consultancy’s role as ‘design guardian’ for Birmingham Bullring development consortium Birmingham Alliance (DW 11 July 2002), in which Land Securities was a partner.

Checkland Kindleysides principal creative director Jeff Kindleysides says the role encompasses the creation of ‘inspirational’ design guidelines to ‘communicate to retailers, designers and shopfitters in a visual and verbal way [Land Securities’] vision for the development’.

He says Checkland Kindleysides will also take on an advisory role, offering the developer opinions on design ideas and encouraging retailers to ‘think creatively beyond their standard or roll-out design’.

The group’s partnership with Land Securities is expected to be ‘ongoing over months and years’, Kindleysides says, as it ‘monitors the development with emphasis on store fronts to make sure visual continuity is achieved and, holistically, the development comes together’ as planned.

Checkland Kindleysides won the work in November on the back of its collaboration with the Birmingham Alliance. Design director David Wright is leading the consultancy team.

The main Cardinal Place scheme, including all retail space, is due to open in July 2005, according to Land Securities project manager Robin Villis.

He says the development will comprise two EPR Architects-designed buildings with retail space at the ground-floor level and office accommodation above.
