Industry calls for tax breaks

The Confederation of British Industry is calling on Chancellor Gordon Brown to boost small- and medium-sized enterprises, by adapting the tax system in his forthcoming budget.

The majority of groups in the design industry fall into the SME category.

The CBI recommends the introduction of 100 per cent capital allowance on a permanent basis to ease cashflows and encourage investment. Capital allowances are currently paid over a four-year period.

It also advocates a lifting of the restrictions attached to the Enterprise Investment Scheme which currently act as a deterrent to outside investors.

The budget will be announced on Tuesday 9 March.
