Manchester set for redesign

Several local consultancies are already in discussions with Manchester clients in the aftermath of the IRA bomb, says Manchester Design Community chairman Jack Garside.

“Out of such a terrible disaster, a great deal of work in design terms will be generated and I hope it will generate work for the region,” Garside says.

The Government has pledged 21m towards the city centre’s redevelopment, 150 000 of which is earmarked for an international urban design competition launching on 17 July.

“City leaders have their eyes set on the unique opportunity to redesign the city centre,” says a spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister Michael Heseltine.
