Kern sets the standard for intellectual porno

Never averse to showcasing raw talent, the Institute of Contemporary Arts is bringing the work of American filmmaker and photographer Richard Kern to London.

A series of stills from his recent book Model Release show girls in ‘more or less standard pornographic poses’ (pictured: Joyce flosses Kim, 1999), which begs the question: what exactly is a non-standard pornographic pose?

However, the accompanying clap-trap dressing porn up as art is far more risqué than the pictures themselves. ‘Now I realise how much participation is in pornography, and a woman’s consent to be objectified is a manifestation of the overall willingness and need for intellectual life to transgress,’ says artist and occasional Kern model Lucy McKenzie in the book’s introduction.

Which is what Loaded readers will be thinking, one hand firmly in pocket, as they ‘appreciate’ the exhibition.
