Newcastle-upon-Tyne group NE6 commissioned Dave Paterson to complete the photography on its menus for Great North Eastern Railway’s first-class service. The images show the country and cityscapes viewed from the train as it travels from London King’s Cross to Inverness and ‘reflect the relaxed bistro-style atmosphere [in first class],’ says NE6 director David Coates. London design group Butler Cornfield Dedman commissioned Michael Terry to produce sign illustrations for Bass Taverns Vintage Inns. The brief was to enhance the period pub exteriors with sympathetic yet consistent signing. The illustrations depict traditional pub names, such as The Red Lion, with amusing and memorable images.

Michael Abrahams and Patrice Gueroult of Amalgam designed and illustrated this brochure for sales and marketing company Mason Rose. Mason Rose represents a variety of independent hotels worldwide and opted for a daring and confident approach to portray the qualities of each hotel. Torn and cut paper was used to produce designs inspired by an anecdote sourced from each hotel.

Andrew Davidson’s illustrations for Yorkshire Water’s Care Programme were commissioned by Leeds design group Elmwood. The communications campaign was produced to inform Yorkshire Water’s customers about the scale and benefits of the investment being made in the region. ‘The aim of the illustrations was to give a nostalgic impression without looking too dated,’ says Elmwood director Paul Middlebrook.

This image of Wolverhampton Wanderers football team by Andrew Mockett, printed from a woodcut, illustrates the month of March in the 1998 Football Museum Calendar. The calendar, by Manchester design group The Chase, celebrates the founding of the first football league and depicts the 12 original teams. It provides a taster for the opening of the football museum sometime next year.

Stuart Patterson was commissioned to produce illustrations for this Boots Healthcare International recruitment brochure targeted at 25- to 35-year-olds. The brochure, by Nottingham group Cunningham Design, uses the illustrations to accentuate the idea of a dynamic office environment.
