Future in doubt for CWC roster

The acquisition of Cable and Wireless Communications’ consumer business by cable operator NTL will see the reshuffling of CWC’s rostered design consultancies by the middle of next year.

A number of roster consultancies will be affected including Nucleus, Interbrand Newell and Sorrell, Revolution, Skidmore Turnbull, Birddog, Thumb, The Team, AKQA, USP and Pres.co.

Despite a message of “business as usual” in the short term from CWC, the cable operator confirms that in the first half of next year its brand will be superseded by that of NTL.

The launch of the Nucleus-designed Cable and Wireless Digital service is ongoing and quarterly meetings of CWC rostered consultancies will continue into next year.

From then CWC customers will be “converted” into NTL customers, necessitating a rethink of customer support and consultancy rostering.

“No decisions have been made as to which consultancies will provide that support,” says a statement issued this week to design groups and other agencies on the current CWC roster.

NTL was unable to provide a list of its design groups. It is working with Basten Greenhill Andrews, which designed its identity.

NTL launches its own TV digitial cable service in September and will roll it out at the start of next year.
