JD Sports and Nike have opened a new store in Manchester’s Arndale Centre with design work by Judge Gill Associates.

The 125m2 store incorporates an advanced video wall fitted into a specially constructed giant steel football which is suspended from the mall’s ceiling. The football incorporates 20 video monitors and is suspended on four steel cables.

The consultancy was appointed before the site was secured. “The mall operators wanted something that would match the excitement of the Warner Brothers store at the other end of the mall, so we were appointed to come up with a striking but workable concept,” says Judge Gill director Kevin Gill. The consultancy worked with Blackwood Structural Design to come up with the football concept.

The interior of the store is based on a circle rather than the conventional square format. JD Sports’ core offer – sports shoes – is positioned in the middle as a focus to its other goods and Nike’s offer, which is situated on the circumference of the circle.
