Redesign is on The Opera Terrace menu

London restaurateur Groupe Chez Gérard is to spend at least 2m on design for three new restaurants, one of which is a complete refurbishment of The Opera Terrace in Covent Garden.

The group’s deputy chairman Laurence Isaacson has confirmed that London consultancy Virgile & Stone is “highly likely” to be designing the Opera Terrace restaurant, to be named Chez Gérard at The Opera Terrace.

The Opera Terrace had a complete redesign last year, with interiors by Laurence Llewelyn- Bowen and features by Shaun Clarkson and Iman Abed (DW 8 July 1994).

Groupe Chez Gérard bought the restaurant seven weeks ago.

“I don’t like the interiors at all, they must be changed,” says Isaacson.

He hopes to make a final decision about The Opera Terrace’s design in the next few weeks. “We may need more than one designer,” he adds.

The other projects are Scotts restaurant, which will be redesigned by Peter Leonard & Company, and Café Italian, which “definitely needs redesigning” according to Isaacson, though a designer is yet to be appointed for the project. It will be renamed Bertorelli’s Café Italian.
