Some people will do anything to get out of a Design Week bash.

At the first in the new series of informal Dinner Talks last week, Global Innovation Network founder Richard Watson, who obviously planned his early exit nine months ago, rushed off to hospital where his wife was giving birth just as editor Lynda Relph-Knight stood up to make her welcome speech. His dramatic exit almost upstaged guest speaker Lord Puttnam.

Shame Watson missed the meal, but at least he had managed a few pre-natal glasses of champagne.

A healthy, 8lb plus baby was born about eight hours later.
