Freelance illustrator Ian Wright aims to capture the essence of jazz music and to convey a sense of reverence with illustrations of jazz legends Charles Mingus (shown left) and Dexter Gordon. The pictures appear on the covers of two new British Film Institute documentary videos. ‘By using illustrations rather than photographs the BFI has broken the mould of this type of documentary. The form better captures the hipness and excitement of the music,’ says Wright.

The Bioscience Centre at The International Centre for Life, Newcastle’s landmark millennium project, officially opened last week.The Centre for Life, designed by Terry Farrell & Partners, includes an interactive visitor attraction called Helix, created by Event. This will use multimedia exhibits, theatres and simulators to tell the story of genetics. Building Design Partnership is overall project manager and is providing architectural and engineering design. It is hoped the centre will attract new biotechnology businesses to Newcastle.
