119 projects bid for grants

The Millennium Commission has named 119 applications for funding, totalling 517m, which have been “long listed” for more detailed investigation. Those chosen will be included in the third round of Millennium Commission awards.

Among the proposed projects are a science and technology centre with a “millennium beacon” in Chelmsford, a tall ships visitor centre in Middlesborough, and an improved telescope and visitor centre at Jodrell Bank. A total of 1011 applications were received. Successful applicants from the list will be chosen throughout the year.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has announced grants to 84 applicants from around the UK, amounting to 28.5m. A project to expand Hat Works, The Museum of Hatting in Stockport, has received an award of 1.33m to expand its facilities to new premises. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council confirms that design work for the project will be put out to tender.

The Aerospace Museum in Shifnal, Shropshire, has received nearly 1.5m for development of an Aviation and Heritage Centre.
