Design Council under fire for campaign

The Design Council and Creative and Cultural Skills are facing criticism of their industry-wide consultation investigating the future of British design.

D&AD has expressed concern at the negative positioning of a campaign to promote the initiative, which is being run through www.keepbritishdesignalive .com.

D&AD chief executive Michael Hockney and education chairman Garrick Hamm stress that the ‘creative practice and education in the UK is in good shape’ and express surprise at ‘what appears to be the imminent demise of the British design industry’ (see Letters, page 11).

‘We want to promote debate in the design industry and are pleased that people are becoming engaged,’ says a spokeswoman for the Design Council.

The CCS is holding its Creative Apprenticeships event on 13 July.
