Shubhankar Ray, creative director of Spanish footwear company Camper, visited Brazil scouting for locations. Inspired by the ‘impact of globalisation and consumption on a culture rooted in multicultural tribes’, he picked up his camera, shooting burnt out cars, violence, music, a race track and cityscapes. Here is a selection of the images

‘I was interested in the contrast between typical images of Brazil in the West, and the reality of the country,’ says Ray. ‘The impression I got was that it was quite a sinister place and not how I imagined Brazil to be. And, or course, the difference between rich and poor was enormous.’

To experience Brazilian food, art and street market culture visit Brasil 40° at Selfridges, London W1A until 31 May
