Colourful revamp not everyone’s cup of tea

I read with interest that several clients have been in touch with the designers, CM Design Consultants, of the revamped AJ Ramsey’s bar in Edinburgh (DW 8 August). They replaced the rather splendid-sounding traditional dark timber and brass interior with a gaudy “brightly coloured continental bar and bistro style” complete with “white concrete with inlaid mosaic, mirror and glass beads”.

I can’t help being reminded of the boast by PG Wodehouse’s Bertie Wooster character to his ever-faithful manservant Jeeves, that several acquaintances had enquired after the name of the tailor responsible for the particularly gaudy suit he was sporting.

“Doubtless, in order to avoid him,” replied Jeeves.
