Name waters our Capital of Culture status down

Word has it the good burghers of Liverpool have gone all posh now that the city has bagged Capital of Culture status: they want to drop the name Merseyside in favour of something grander.

What folly is this? It’s like the family from Bread upping and moving to Formby. Don’t they realise that Merseyside – or rather Merseybeat – brand values are making a noise again? Haven’t they heard The Coral or The Stands? We fear that a rich cultural tradition is under threat.

Remember those Stone Roses lyrics? ‘I want to be/ Where the drownings are/ You see it in the sea/ River cools where I belong/ In my Mersey paradise.’

It comes to something when it takes the Mancs to tell Scousers what’s what.
