I enjoyed Hugh Pearman’s Private View on the importance of empty time (DW 31 July).

He may have read James Gleick’s book Faster: The Acceleration Of Just About Everything, in which we learn of the obsession the human race has with compressing a temporal quart into our quotidian pint pot.

I was so rivetted by the book that I could not put it down and had to finish it as quickly as possible.
