In 2003, we conceived and instigated Head/Hand/ Heart – an ongoing series of talks and exhibitions by design luminaries.

The guest speaker is chosen as being of particular inspiration to me and the members of the consultancy. The event title derives from the assertion by my Professor of Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art, Richard Guyatt, that every piece of great art and design is a product of the head (intellect), the hand (skill) and the heart (emotion, passion).

The talks were staged in the Bedales Olivier Theatre, itself an inspirational, award-winning building, with invited audiences comprising students, clients, suppliers and friends of all ages. Not all would necessarily be aware of the speaker and their activities, but all leave inspired.

Our inaugural guest was Alan Fletcher – it was initially the Pirelli bus ad that inspired me to pursue a career in graphic design. He was naturally a tough act to follow, but the evergreen George Hardie managed very successfully. Hardie was succeeded in turn by discipline-hopping Richard Seymour who, judging by the enthusiastic reaction afterwards, motivated many of the younger members of the audience to consider a product-related path.

So who’s next? You’ll have to wait and see.
