Flat tops and bottms at Rox

The most popular hairdo at London hair salon Rox just has to be a slaphead.

This perverse approach to flier design is the work of Curious designer Paul Cowley, who prowls around Soho phone boxes.

Cowley collects prostitutes’ calling cards. He’s turned on – though he insists he has never actually rung one – by their design.

“The images are naive, but they’re also very effective, they have a certain spirit of intrigue and naughtiness. They give me a sense of wonder,” Cowley explains.

The Rox image was taken from a card. “It’s not original. I don’t think a prostitute would commission an illustrator,” says Cowley.
