Free Form behind art installations at Oracle development
We were surprised to read your news piece Oracle buys Haskoll’s fun ideas (DW 1 October), which states that the artworks were the responsibility of the architect and Dickson Russell.
Dickson Russell had no role to play in this development. The incorporation of art into the design was initiated by Free Form Arts Trust and was taken on by developer Hammerson.
Free Form was responsible for submissions, the commissioning of the eight artists and designers, the enabling of their designs to be integral to the design by working alongside the architect and supervising this aspect of the project right up to completion.
The combination of an enlightened developer, fine architecture and the incorporation of art into the ethos of a retail and leisure centre has stimulated new visions of the role of art in town centre development.
