Internet café chain the Internet Exchange is embarking on an expansion programme to quadruple its number of outlets across the UK over the next 18 months. Each store will incorporate a new retail concept created by the group’s in-house design team.

Internet Exchange currently has 12 sites. It will open an additional ten shops including sites in Cardiff, York, Bath, Gatwick and Stansted Airports by January 2000, and a further 30 next year. Discussions are also underway to open franchise stores in Germany, Italy and France in the future.

“We’ve made a deliberate move away from the clinical, high-tech image for which Internet cafés are renowned, making them more approachable and inviting,” says IE operations director Mark Roberts.
