Meta founder is ‘visionary’

MetaDesign founder Erik Spiekermann has been named “chief visionary” of MetaDesign San Francisco, after severing links with the MetaDesign office he founded in Berlin.

Spiekermann continues to work as a freelance consultant with the London and San Francisco offices he helped found with the Meta name, having relinquished control of the Berlin office, now called MetaDesign AG, in April (DW 21 April).

Spiekermann does still own a one third stake in the Berlin group. “Meta is an attitude not a company and I will continue to embody it in spirit,” he says.

However, he retains links with MetaDesign London, which has not yet renamed itself after being acquired by Icon Medialab (DW 7 January).

Of his new role in San Francisco Spiekermann says: “I believe my role is one of an evangelist, in the American business definition of the word.”
