Devolution prompts two design projects

Welsh and Scottish politics will gain design presence with the construction of a Welsh Assembly building by 2000, and Scottish Parliament building by 2001.

The Scottish Office will announce a competition for the design of the Scottish Parliament building, in Edinburgh’s Holyrood. The building, housing 129 SMPs, will eschew the oppositional seating of Westminster in favour of a semi-circle. A budget of 50m is allocated for the project.
