Museums should be planned inside out

I am probably about to make myself a trillion enemies, but an innocent looking little piece under your clever heading Brand new pad for helicopters (DW 9 May) got right up my nose.

The director of the museum in Weston-super-Mare has appointed architects and says they “will not start to select interior or graphic designers until after the result of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid is known… We don’t yet know what the building will cost or even look like,” he says.

Any half-sensible museum designer will tell you that a museum must be designed from the interior outwards. Heaven forbid that yet another monument to architectural skills goes up which is completely unsuitable for interpreting objects, particularly things as big and demanding as 70 helicopters. When will it end?
