The Science Museum’s 34.5m Challenge of Materials gallery opened on Tuesday, with design by Jasper Jacobs Associates.

The permanent 1500m2 space aims to bring “the secret world of materials, industry and manufacturing to life”, says a museum spokesman. The museum will bring in external design consultants to update the core displays every 18 months, says museum head of design Tim Molloy.

The centrepiece for the gallery is architect Chris Wilkinson’s steel and glass bridge.
