Ikea at 30: celebrating three decades of designing for British homes

As the retailer marks its 30th birthday in the UK, we visit its immersive house party in London and speak to interior design leader Clotilde Passalacqua.

Ikea turns 30 in the UK this year, and to mark the occasion the Swedish retailer is throwing “the ultimate house party”. To be more specific, it is throwing a series of immersive house parties at a four-floor exhibition space in Central London.

By day, visitors get a snapshot into the archetypal British living room dating from the 1980s – when the brand first launched in the UK – right up to the 2000s. The final room of the exhibition explores what our homes could look like in the next 30 years.

By night, the space transforms into a full-on house party, complete with decade-appropriate cocktails, canapés and classic tunes. Think prawn cocktails for the 1980s, Britpop bangers in the 1990s and models donning Juicy Couture tracksuits for the 2000s.

We speak to the brains behind the operation, Ikea’s interior design leader Clotilde Passalacqua.

The Ikea House Party runs from 18-21 October 2017 at 19 Greek Street, London W1D 4DT. Entry is free. For more information, head here.
