Learn to deal with humans if you want to get the best out of a valuable resource

How refreshing to read Simon Rhind-Tutt’s thoughts on people management and development (DW 9 August).

How refreshing to read Simon Rhind-Tutt’s thoughts on people management and development (DW 9 August).

The Team already has many of Rhind-Tutt’s suggestions in place. For example, we have just completed one of our twice yearly company-wide staff appraisals.

Every so often, however, the design industry is cited as the poor relation when it comes to dealing with the people side of its business. Other industries have human resources staff to deal with these issues.

But design consultancies are often run by designers who have also learned how to become people managers.

We collectively need to get better at this side of the business and take time out to apply as much passion and commitment to our staff and their development as we do our clients.
