Hawkins stands erect and proud

Who says accountants aren’t funny? It’s known they can be peculiar, but really funny?

But here comes some electronic evidence of humour in the dusty ledgers. Design Bridge accountant Mike Hawkins, aka Burt Backache, is on his back with a slipped disc and e-mailed the Bridge’s inhabitants to keep them up to scratch.

There’s a good self-deprecating start: “Some of you may have noticed my absence.”

It goes on to tell of the disc slipping and the subsequent discipline of limited horizontal activity: “Contrary to what you might have heard, my mind has been unaffected – it is still as dirty as ever. I shall return as soon as I am able to get erect, if you know what I mean.”

Surely accountancy cannot contain this man and his humour. There is an obvious alternative career beckoning in comedy. As a stand-up.

Except he can’t.
