Rega, the Essex manufacturer of hi-fi turntables, is launching what it describes as its `definitive’ turntable, the Planar 9. After three years in development, the Rega Planar 9 will retail at about ú1500 when it is launched in May. Designed in-house, the Planar 9 had to be styled within `the very conservative genre’ customers expect when buying high-specification audio equipment, according to Rega product designer Simon Heap. Aimed at a worldwide market, Rega expects to make up to 50 units a month in response to a demand for turntables which, surprisingly, is showing signs of growth despite the rise of CD players, says Heap.
