Victoria & Albert Museum curator Gareth Williams may have enjoyed packing the best of the Milan furniture fair into a metaphorical VW, but chances are he wasn’t overwhelmed by having a BBC 4 (what?) camera crew breathing down his neck for three days.

He was being filmed for a programme by the fledgling channel with fledgling viewing figures, aired last Wednesday, and insists the experience was a pleasant one.

The TV programme aimed to take the glamorous world of furniture design to a wider public, apparently. Why didn’t they show it on BBC 2, then?
