As part of the North America Now initiative, a successful evening was organised last month at Scottish Design.

The purpose was to promote the North American market to UK designers and show that the general implication of these initiatives is to encourage UK businesses to export.

Such evenings are indicative of Scottish Design’s current approach and provide a demonstration that at least one design body realises the danger highlighted by the editor’s comment “Design bodies need to be more than a club” (DW 4 August).

Scottish Design seeks to be a proactive centre of information exchange for the design and business community, rather than a club. The ultimate aim is to offer experience and expertise to industry – to evaluate, disseminate and initiate fundamental solutions to design-related problems.

Projects like North America Now provide an opportunity for designers and businesses to benefit from the experience of established UK exporters.

Moreover, they demonstrate that Scottish Design realises the need to be more than a club if it is to increase business competitiveness through the promotion of design as a life-improving factor.
