I would like to congratulate Larry Barker on his appointment as president of British Design & Art Direction. The focus of his mission, as reported (DW 4 February), is a subject dear to Navy Blue’s heart – to boost the standard of writing.
Design is a powerful tool, as previous D&AD president, Richard Seymour, made us all aware. The strength of design’s punch, however, can be doubled with a good use of words. In advertising words are a core craft: this isn’t the case in design.
We should encourage more creative collaboration between designers and wordsmiths to produce world class design.
