PMP lands shopping job in Brixton

PMP is designing a new 1500 sqm retail development adjacent to Brixton Underground station in London, which is due to open in the summer. The consultancy was appointed in January 1998.

Provisionally called The Central Site, it will house new stores for Sainsbury’s, Argos, WH Smith, Carphone Warehouse and Claire’s Accessories. It is being developed in conjunction with Swan Hill Properties and Lambeth Council.

PMP’s contemporary design will feature reconstituted Portland stone and powder-coated steel panels for the interiors and exteriors, in a bid to mirror central London retail designs.

“All parties wanted to bring a little bit more of the West End to Brixton. In our styling of the development, therefore, we combined a range and quality of materials and design features seen more often in London’s Oxford Street than in a local high street,” says PMP managing director Derek Price.

The back of the 36m-wide development will open on to the railway bridge.
