Why fly south for design and ignore local talent?

Now, here’s a question. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is key to Liverpool’s growth. In fact, it is an integral part of commerce throughout the North West.

So, my question is this. Why did the job to redevelop the brand and its internal space go to a consultancy on the South Coast (www. designweek.co.uk 7 January)?

Broome Jenkins (which commissioned illustrator John McFaul to create a 300m-long mural for the airport terminal, pictured above) is a great consultancy with a proven track record in its field, but there are consultancies within the city of Liverpool which have also produced international award-winning work that I’m sure would have offered a truly exceptional service.

It’s yet another blow to the growth of the Liverpool creative sector, which is finding it tough to change the prevailing mindset that if you want good work, then look elsewhere.

In these times of economic uncertainty, we should be investing back into Liverpool. As with any business, growth is only obtainable by reinvestment, and Liverpool is no different.

Further to the ‘Opinion’ comment entitled ‘Why Fly South for design and ignore local talent?’ from Matt Wardle, MD of Black and Ginger, whilst it is true that Broome Jenkins have an office in Chichester, they are also based here in the North West too and importantly have a great deal of experience in working with Airports and in this particular field. They have worked on the design of the ’08 Place tourism office in Liverpool and also at St. George’s Hall in the City centre and already had a proven track record with John Lennon Airport and the Culture Company – hence the reason for using them. In addition, John McFaul originates from Wirral and has a close affinity with Liverpool and importantly company’s such as River Media who have also spent a considerable amount of time on this project are Liverpool based and their work on this project is a superb showcase for young local design and creative talent. Matt is right that Merseyside has an enormous wealth of creative talent and the Airport is only too happy to tap into this resource wherever possible.
