Moves afoot to create five further Eden Projects

The Eden Project, which celebrates its tenth anniversary today, is in talks to create further Edens in different locations around the world.

Speaking at the Tile Zone exhibition design conference in the London Transport Museum yesterday, Derek Johnson, a project manager for Eden, said it is hoped that over the next 10 -15 years there will be about five further Eden Projects worldwide.

Six locations have been short-listed, with the most likely being Singapore and China. Other potential locations include Georgia, Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, and Valencia in Spain, though the decision will depend on land availability, finance and government support.

According to Johnson, while these separate Edens would not roll out the Cornwall model, they will still focus on sustainability and the environment, using ‘the same mechanics of art, architecture and music’.

He went on to say that due to the likely city location of the other Edens, the format may not use plants like the Cornish Eden, but instead could see the project ‘on the streets’, helping people living in cities to ‘reconnect to real life’ and live sustainably.
