Conran’s namesake – a real tongue twister

Letters to the Editor should be sent to Design Week, 50 Poland Street, London W1V 4AX. Fax: 0171-734 1770.

Firstly, congratulations on DW’s tenth anniversary and on your accompanying book. However, we are 40 years old, not 30, as is mentioned. Which leads me to a similar point.

We are indeed, as reported by Sir Terence Conran last week (DW 11 October), changing our name to Conran Design Group. However, he missed the word “back” in his sentence. The company he and Storehouse sold to the then RSCG Group, was, and still is, the same business – namely Conran Design Group. Even today it has several members of [the original] Conran Design Group still working here, myself included.

However, Sir Terence has a point. We are flattered to carry his name, and to share his ideals, but never to pretend that life should not move forward or to lay claim to his patronage. Besides which, have you ever tried answering the phone “RSCG Conran Design”. It doesn’t quite roll off the tongue.
