The Gateshead Millennium Bridge has been awarded the UK’s highest architectural accolade, the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, which won the award last year for the Magna Project, the bridge comprises two arches that tilt when the structure is opened to allow river traffic through.

The ‘blinking eye’ bridge was described by judges as ‘a heroic piece of construction and engineering’.

The Stirling Prize is awarded to the project judged to have made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.
