Version 5 of Macromedia’s Director is imminent. We’re reviewing it. The interesting thing is that it uses Xtras, third party plug-ins, like Quark’s Xtensions and the new PageMaker things. There’s a couple of dozen of them, including speech recognition (from Digital Dreams) and a very fast database called FileFlex from Component Software. They will be shipping within 90 days of Director 5’s formal launch. Don’t pay a lot for them. An unguarded passage in the press release reveals that at least one of the Xtras took “weeks rather than months to develop”.
