Heard the one about the policeman’s wobbly helmet?

For years, tourists have flocked to admire the size and stature of the humble British bobby’s dazzling dome. That proud, distinctive shape is appreciated by millions worldwide, but having a big helmet – a more than manly 12 inches in height – can be a bit of a handful, it seems.

‘It wobbles unless you keep your head still,’ says assistant chief constable Barry Taylor, who is heading up a project to improve this vital part of the policeman’s lot.

Design colleges have been asked to submit ideas for a redesign. ‘It’s basically the same shape, but will be shorter by 2 or 3 inches,’ says Taylor. Ouch. ‘The new helmet will have a lower centre of gravity,’ he adds.

Hopefully, the police force’s prowess will not be affected by this change.
