London Bridge to link to jobs

Plans by Railtrack to redevelop London Bridge railway station is likely to result in a variety of design jobs coming up for grabs. Railtrack has been granted planning permission to rebuild the site, including up to 19 000m2 of retail and leisure space.

Development plans hinge on the approval of the Thameslink 2000 scheme, which would see track redevelopment and more trains using London Bridge. The scheme is subject to public enquiry, which is expected to conclude this month.

Wilkinson Eyre is the appointed architectural design consultancy to the £400m project, which is expected to start in 2002 and take four years to complete.

A Railtrack spokesman confirms retail and leisure outlets will include a mix of traditional station outlets, as well as a retail shopping mall.

Railtrack’s scheme includes the creation of an expanded entrance to the station and concourse area that will house restaurants, cafés and bars, as well as a wider variety of retail services for passengers and locals.
