Why 15% off isn’t good enough for the environment

It is fantastic to see that companies are looking to reduce their impact on the environment (‘Sony Ericsson releases “Green” mobile phones’, www.designweek.co.uk, 5 June).

However, in my view a 15 per cent reduction in carbon footprint does not constitute a Green phone.

Sony Ericsson will churn out hundreds of thousands of these phones, most of which will still end up in landfills.

We should look more towards implementing cradle-to-cradle closed-loop systems, and create products which are ‘good’, rather than simply ‘less bad’.
